📍 Mani

🌍 On my wishlist

Greece · Southern Peloponnese

The middle of the three peninsulas hanging off the southern Peloponnese — wild, rocky and unyielding, with stone tower-houses, Byzantine chapels, sea caves and the southernmost tip of mainland Greece.

🗓️ Best time to go

May–June and September–early October: warm sea without the heatwave or the crowds, and ideal for the hikes. July–August gets brutally hot in the bare, rocky Inner Mani.

🚆 Getting around

A car is essential — there's almost no public transport and the roads are winding (though distances are short). Gateways: Kalamata from the west, Gythio/Sparti from the east. Loop route: Kalamata → Kardamyli → Stoupa → Areopoli → Diros → Cape Tainaron → Kotronas → Gythio.

Interesting places to visit

  • Kardamyli

The prettiest village, with the fortified Old Kardamyli quarter and the house where writer Patrick Leigh Fermor lived.

  • Limeni

A tiny turquoise cove below Areopoli — eat right at the water's edge.

  • Diros Caves

Lake caves you cross by boat, among the most important in Europe (~€15 entry).

  • Vatheia

The iconic fortress-village of stone towers perched on a hill, with sweeping views.

  • Cape Tainaron

The southernmost point of mainland Greece; a ~40-min hike to the lighthouse, the mythical 'Gate to Hades'.

  • Gythio & Kranai

Amphitheatrical neoclassical houses above the harbour, the islet of Kranai, and the Dimitrios shipwreck on Selinitsa beach.

  • Areopoli

The stone-built capital of Mani — an ideal base.

What to eat

  • Gythio fish tavernas

Fresh fish along the harbour — the town's claim to fame.

  • Limeni

A meal with your feet practically in the turquoise water.

  • Syglino & lalangia

Local smoked pork and fried dough strips, Maniot staples.

Practical tips

  • Rent a car

There's no real public transport; roads are winding but distances are short.

  • Base + day trips

Stay in Areopoli or Kardamyli and radiate out on day trips.

  • Vatheia at sunset

The light on the towers is the defining image of Mani.

💶 Rough budget

€80–€130 / day

Stone guesthouses €50–90/night (boutique stays in Limeni €120+). Meals €15–25. A 5-day road trip works out to roughly €400–600/person excluding transport to/from the region.
